The Coimbra University Press (IUC) completes, this week, the mark of 600 books indexed in the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB). The increase in the number of books on the platform is part of the actions of the University of Coimbra within the scope of the International Open Access Week, celebrated from 19 to 25 October and promoted internationally by the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC). At the national level, the initiative is led by the Scientific Open Access Scientific Repositories of Portugal (RCAAP).

Last June, the Coimbra University Press (IUC) had already celebrated the accomplishment of being in the top 3% of publishers with the most publications in the DOAB. At the time, the number reached was 576 books.

In addition to the inclusion of 24 new IUC books this week on DOAB, the University of Coimbra also participates in the International Open Access Week with two online initiatives open to the entire academic community. This Wednesday, 21, Vice-Rectors Cláudia Cavadas (Vice-Rector for Research and Third Cycle) and Delfim Leão (Vice-Rector for Culture and Open Science) discuss the UNESCO Recommendation for Open Science, made public a few days ago. The University of Coimbra participated actively in the elaboration of the document, through the representation that Vice-Rector Delfim Leão has as a member of the UNESCO Advisory Committee on Open Science.

On Friday, 23, there will also be a session that will address the cultural and scientific heritage of the AlmaMater collection, an old bibliographic fund of the University that was renovated in 2019. The session will be presented by Ana Luísa Silva, from the UC Integrated Libraries Services. The Alma Mater collection is considered the most historically significant among UC digital libraries, and it played an important role during the Covid-19 pandemic, allowing visitors to explore, from home, their collection, with part of the most precious documents of the University.

The International Open Access Week is a worldwide initiative and has, in this year's motto, the idea of “Open with Purpose: Taking Action to Build Structural Equity and Inclusion”. Equity has been a recurring theme in the annual celebrations of the Week: it is in focus for the third consecutive time since 2018.
