Held in Setúbal on 14 and 15 November, the 10th edition of the Research Data Management Forum (GDI Forum) was attended by a wide range of UC agents from different units, services and academic areas of the University.

During the event, the UC team presented the implementation strategy for an Open Science Community (OSC) in Coimbra (Inês Almeida, FMUC), as well as revealed the results of the surveys aimed at 8 Superior Education Institutions in partnership with FCT/FCCN (Catarina Domingues, Ana Carvalho and Jorge Noro, iiiUC). The UC team took part in various workshops, organising debates on institutional repositories, data curation workflows and training data stewards (Joaquim Santos, CEF - Café com Dados Repositórios, Bruno Direito, CISUC - Zapping POLEN, and Café com Dados Repositórios; Jorge Noro, iiiUC - Rede Nacional Data Stewards and Data Stewardship Workshop).

The programme of the GDI Forum, which this year had 165 participants, allowed for participation in multifaceted debates, with topics that included the most diverse areas related to open science, with emphasis on topics linked to skills training, data curation, workflows, success stories and the ecosystem of human resources and information technologies for open science. Besides researchers, librarians, IT professionals and policymakers took part.

The 10th edition of the GDI Forum was supported as well by the GDI Forum working groups that have been active over the last few years. The presence of UC and its participatory impact has been growing, reflecting the interest of the University's stakeholders in topics related to data management and open science as a whole.

Highlights and collaborations

The thematic panel on Open Data in Portugal was one of the highlights of the programme. António Soares (AMA, Agency for Administrative Modernisation), presented the idea of high-value data (Decree-Law 2023/138) and the Mais Transparência Portal, reflecting the importance of contributing to the open data ecosystem.

On the same panel, Pedro Fradinho Marques (SPMS, Shared Services of the Ministry of Health) spoke about the national data strategy and changes underway, namely the creation of a massive health data repository in Portugal, as well as the creation of a European Health Data Space. The SNS Transparency Portal was an important focus of the presentation, emphasising its importance and primary and secondary use.

The presentation by Curtis Sharma, leader of the "Professional Networks for Lifelong Learning" working group of the Skills4EOSC project, on the thematic panel Development of national networks of Data Stewards in Europe, also provided important reflections on the implementation of a Portuguese national network of data managers/curators.

The Forum also made it possible to build bridges to new projects and consortia, as well as consolidate debates on topics such as the challenges of Open Science, Data Management, repositories and skills profiles, including debates on new careers in science and data management.

At the meeting, the FCT/FCCN announced the publication, by the end of 2023, of the National Programme for Open Science and Open Research Data (PNCA DAI). The Foundation presented strategic opportunities arising from the Programme, as well as highlighting practical aspects of the simplified implementation of future FCT-funded projects.
