Deconstructing a serious topic in a more informal environment" at PubhD Coimbra!

PhD student Isabel Silva came to the September issue of PubhD Coimbra to present her research project: "Microplastics and antibiotic-resistant bacteria: a double threat". As part of her PhD in Biosciences, she is a member of the "Center for Functional Ecology - Science for People & the Planet" (CEF). There was a lot of bioaccumulation on this topic!

Why did you decide to participate in PubhD Coimbra?

I took part because I think it's an opportunity to communicate science to an audience that is interested in these topics but perhaps doesn't have the opportunity to hear about them in a more informal context. I thought it was an opportunity to share the problems I work with, in a context that can reach people in my age group. And I work with a problem that not everyone is very aware of, and it's an opportunity to spread this knowledge.

How was your experience in this edition of PubhD Coimbra?

It was nice! I was nervous because I'm used to talking to an audience of experts, so I'm used to giving a more formal type of presentation. I was nervous because I didn't know how to deconstruct a topic that is super serious in a more informal setting. But I think it went well!

Would you advise other colleagues to participate?

I'd recommend it and I already have! I hope you have the chance to try it out. It was a great experience, in the sense of trying to deconstruct a presentation that I'm used to giving to a more serious audience. So yes, I would recommend it!
