On Tuesday, April 16, at 17h30, RÓMULO - Science Center of the University of Coimbra will host the presentation of the book "Semicondutores e nanoestruturas: uma introdução" (Semiconductors and nanostructures: an introduction), by Rui César Vilão, published by the UC Press and presented by José António Paixão and Xavier Pinheiro.

About the book:

Semiconductors are among the materials with the greatest impact on everyday life, on which much of contemporary technology is based. It is therefore not surprising that it is an area of heavy investment, whether in fundamental or applied research, in multidisciplinary teams of physicists, chemists, materials engineers, electrical engineers or computer engineers. From the point of view of contemporary physics, semiconductors are one of the discipline's best calling cards, linking fundamental contributions with the applied side and the transfer of knowledge and technology in an exemplary way. This is eloquently summed up in the many contributions that have been awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics since the growth of the discipline in the second half of the 20th century. In this book, an attempt is made to set out in a didactic but complete way the fundamentals of semiconductor physics necessary for understanding the essential issues, as well as the main applications.

About the author:

Rui César Vilão is an Associate Professor (com Agregação) at the Physics Department of the University of Coimbra and a Researcher at the Physics Center of the University of Coimbra. His research focuses on Condensed Matter Physics, in particular the study of the effects of hydrogen as an impurity and point defects on the properties of semiconductor materials and insulators of technological interest. He is the co-author of several dozen research articles, mainly on work using positive muons as local probes in semiconductors and insulators, using the muon spin spectroscopy (µSR) technique.
