"Please seize the opportunity of a lifetime, as I did". This was how the Rector of the University of Coimbra (UC), Amílcar Falcão, addressed the international students during the first welcome session.

In a hall full of students from different countries, the event offered practical information about the university, the faculties and the city.

During the opening session, the Vice-Rector for External Relations and Alumni of the UC, João Nuno Calvão da Silva, promised the audience: "This will be one of the best years of your life".

The event was graced by a special guest, the Ukrainian Ambassador to Portugal, Maryna Mykhailenko, who took the opportunity to praise relations with Portugal, quote Fernando Pessoa and issue a challenge to the young people present: "Freedom is always stronger than fear". The Ambassador pointed out that "Ukraine is fighting for freedom" as it continues on its path towards joining the European Union.

"You, the youth, are the future" and "you have a great responsibility" to fight for a better world, reminded the President of the General Directorate of the Academic Association of Coimbra (AAC), João Caseiro, during the closing session, further adding: "you will fall in love with this city".

After receiving their welcome pack and all the useful info about the University and Coimbra, the students also had the opportunity to listen to one of the oldest student groups in the country, FAN-farra Académica de Coimbra.

The Erasmus Welcome Session, which brought together 450 international students, was organised by the International Relations Unit of the University of Coimbra, with the support of the City Council, AAC and the Erasmus Student Network (ESN). The second Welcome Session will take place on the 19th of September at the UC Rectory Auditorium.
