Through the UC Transforma platform, the University of Coimbra is recruiting, until January 31, volunteer students that have the skills to translate, from English into Portuguese, exercises and articles on basic and secondary mathematics education. The translation initiative is a partnership between UC and Fundação Altice Portugal together with Khan Academy, which offers free teaching tools globally.

The Khan Academy project is made available in Portugal by Fundação Altice and has already more than 150 thousand users in the country. Its purpose is "to provide a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere". The free content is created by American specialists and adapted for the Portuguese context by the Altice Foundation. The videos are validated by the Portuguese Mathematical Society and the exercises by the Mathematics Teachers Association. In Portugal, UC is the only university to join the Foundation to promote the translation and scientific validation of Khan Academy content, in addition to being the only higher education institution in Portuguese language to assume this role so far.

The recruited volunteers will have the goal of translating 50.000 words, task to be carried out between February and May 2021. UC will grant to those participating a Diploma Supplement, and a certificate of participation will also be issued by Khan Academy itself. The focus is on recruiting students from the Mathematics Teaching course (undergraduate or master's degree), but enrollments can also be received from students from other mathematics or engineering courses.

The collaborative translation initiative, in addition to promoting social training with students, contributes to the promotion of open educational resources, which is one of the principles of Open Science.

About UC Transforma

UC Transforma is a pioneering platform in Portugal, launched by UC in November 2020, which centralizes volunteer initiatives to aggregate efforts and enhance student participation, as highlighted by the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs and Social Action Services, Cristina Albuquerque, at its launch. The idea of the platform is to bring together projects and volunteers, connecting them.

The project was launched by UC in partnership with the Transforma Brasil Movement and the Student Forum (Fórum Estudante). Know more about it here.
