Theoretical background
The Symptom Validity Scale - Version 2 (SVS-2) is a brief instrument to screen for malingering behaviors and exaggerating psychopathological symptoms and cognitive problems.
The EVS-2 is a self-response instrument with 48 dichotomous response items (“True” / “False”), which allows the assessment of three domains: Psychosis (P), Emotional Disorders (EP) and Cognitive Problems (CP). EVS-2 is intended for the population aged 18 years and over and takes approximately 10-15 minutes to administer. The total scale score ranges from 0 (minimum score) to 48 points (maximum score).
The construction of the EVS-2 (preceded by an experimental version; cf. Simões, Nunes, & Cunha, 2011; Cunha, 2011; Nunes, 2011) is the result of a process of development and refinement that took place between 2010 and 2015. Firstly, it started with a set of 385 items formulated based either on a review of the literature on malingering behaviors or on the selection and reformulation of the most relevant items from other important specific symptom validity tests and personality tests/inventories: the Structured Interview of Reported Symptoms (SIRS; Rogers, Bagby, & Dickens, 1992); the Structured Interview of Reported Symptoms – 2nd Edition (SIRS-2; Rogers, Sewell, & Guillard, 2010); the Miller Forensic Assessment of Symptoms Test (M-FAST; Miller, 2001); the Malingering Probability Scale (MPS; Silverton, 1998); the Assessment of Depression Inventory (ADI; Mogge & LePage, 2004); the Personality Assessment Inventory's Negative Impression Management scale (PAI; Morey, 1991); the Debasement Scale of the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory – III (MCMI-III; Millon, Davis, & Millon, 1997); the Fake Bad Scale (from the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory – 2 (MMPI-2; Butcher et al., 1989); the Symptom Validity Scale from the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory – 2 – Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF; Ben-Porath & Tellegen, 2008/2011) (Simões, Almeida, & Ferreira, 2015).

Studies
The EVS-2 research, which began in 2010, was developed with the following objectives: 1) to build and validate an adequate screening instrument to examine malingering behaviors and exaggeration of psychopathological symptoms and cognitive problems, which would work as a complementary measure to SIMS, considering the need to use more than one psychopathology and malingering measure in assessment protocols; 2) establish norms for their interpretation; and 3) analyze the potential of its use as a screening tool in forensic and clinical contexts.
EVS-2 validation studies were carried out using several samples. In total, 542 subjects were evaluated: 152 subjects in the forensic context (Legal, Prison, Regulation of Parental Responsibilities) and 390 subjects in the community context (Simões, Almiro, Nunes, Cunha, Almeida, Domingues, Ferreira, Paiva, Dias, & Cruz, 2017).
The EVS-2 is an instrument consisting of a Manual (in a new writing phase), an item and answer sheet and a scoring key.
Future research
The EVS-2 can be requested from authors, in a contracted research register.
