Four students from the new Erasmus Mundus Master's Degree in Planetary Geosciences (MEMGP), run by the Physics, Mathematics and Earth Sciences departments, won the national phase of the 6th edition of the CASSINI Hackathon and qualified for the final. They were Sarah Cader, Mariia Utkina, Jakub Morawski, and Victor Lopez (center, photo).

The CASSINI Hackathon took place in 10 European countries (Croatia, Estonia, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain and Ukraine), in a hybrid format, over the weekend of November 3-5. In Portugal, the city of Porto hosted the event. Three Portuguese teams, including MEMGP students, shared a prize of three thousand euros.

This is a competition for projects (business ideas, software prototypes, etc.) using space technology. The DF team chose a challenge entitled EscapeWar.net, a project focused on assessing the level of danger in a war zone, based on remote sensing (Sentinel-2 images), machine learning and information provided by users. The processing of this information makes it possible to generate warning signals that are sent to local populations, suggesting the safest alternatives for escape (https://taikai.network/cassinihackathons/hackathons/intdev-humaid/projects/clodhe46g021zxk01fjzlr0al/idea).

The DF student team also took part in the international final, which took place on November 9th. Despite not being one of the three teams chosen, our students performed very well and are to be congratulated!
