COIMBRA

Coimbra is one of the most important urban centres of Portugal after the much larger Lisbon and Porto Metropolitan Areas. The city contains archaeological remains dating from the time when it was the Roman town of Aeminium, such as its well-preserved cryptoporticus. From 1139 to about 1260, it served as the capital of Portugal. In the Late Middle Ages, declining as the political centre of the Kingdom of Portugal, Coimbra began to evolve into a major European cultural centre with the foundation of the University of Coimbra in 1290.

The University of Coimbra is the oldest academic institution in the Portuguese-speaking world. It celebrates its 733rd anniversary in 2023. The University attracts visitors from around the world due to its monumental buildings and history. UNESCO nominated the University of Coimbra, Alta and Sofia as World Heritage in 2013. This recognition by UNESCO was justified by the University’s magnificent historical, architectural and cultural heritage surroundings.

The importance of the University of Coimbra in the life of the city is reflected, for example, in the epithet “Student City”, or in the annual event of the “Queima das Fitas” [“Burning of the Ribbons”] (which was held 19-26 May 2023, at the Praça da Canção), a festive time when students celebrate the traditions of academic life as well as the city itself.
