Síntese do Projeto: The objective of this Module is to study, debate and understand the threats to democracy in the EU, and to sustain proposals to face the problem and strengthen democracy, delivering innovative scientific knowledge to the academic community, to policymakers and civil society. It addresses low levels of knowledge about the EU political system and awareness of its importance in citizen’s life, promoting civic engagement and participation in political and democratic processes. The module focuses on two dimensions of the EU as a political system: the politics and the policies of the EU. In each one, our objective is twofold: (i) to identify an understand elements and processes that can be related with threats to democracy and (ii) to find and understand which institutional, normative, and political mechanisms have been and can be effective in strengthening democracy in the EU. Through a research based and learning delivery approach, the module aims to impact academic community, policymakers, civil servants, civil organizations, and society. This is achieved with three kinds of actions: research, pedagogical and knowledge transfer activities, that are multidisciplinary based, involving an international team of scholars in EU studies from political science, international relations, economy, sociology, and history fields. The pedagogical activities encompass teaching in classes of the bachelor in European Studies, at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra, a Spring School for national and international graduate and postgraduate students, training courses, policy-oriented papers. Research approach will be delivered through scientific publications and reflected in the above mentioned pedagogical and knowledge transfer activities.
