COIMBRA Sustainable Tourism LLM Large Language Models applied to create better experiences for tourists and local communities, whilst supporting the development of a Sustainable Tourism Destination

Síntese do Projeto: UNESCO sites need to engage on a permanent dialogue with stakeholders (local & international) to integrate planning for tourism and heritage management in local sustainable development strategies. This challenge encompasses several missions, such as: (1) working closely with the tourism sector to understand their needs and support the implementation of sustainable practices; (2) be engaged with tourists before (to support trip Planning) and after (to evaluate their experiences); (3) include local communities in the planning and management of tourism and (4) integrate DATA to support decision-making from public and private sector to enhance the overall experience of the tourist and support Sustainable Tourism practices. The proposed solution(s) from Coimbra are unconventional and scalable, and incorporate: (1)An innovative Web Portal based on Large Language Models, enriched with real and valuable data about the destination (over 300 products), that proposes personalized itineraries for tourists ensuring a longer touristic experience in Coimbra; (2)A Labor Observatory to support the upskilling and reskilling in Tourism sector, fostering local and regional competitiveness; (3)Development of an international certification model promoting the sustainability of heritage destination. This innovative approach will allow an increase of the tourists’ average stay of 20% [1,5>1,8], provide over 2000 training hours and test a new certification model on Sustainable Tourism.
