Acrónimo: Macroalgae and Halophytes
Objetivo temático: Given the growing interest in finding new antimicrobial agents to combat resistance, this research proposal aims to comprehensively evaluate Portuguese macroalgae and halophytes as valid sources of secondary metabolites with strong antimicrobial activity.
Área Científica: Interdisciplinary cooperation between marine ecology and microbiology areas.
Síntese do Projeto: This study will make use of the large collection of antibiotic resistant bacteria available at the University of Coimbra to test extracts and essential oils derived from the collected macroalgae and/or halophytes. Portugal, with its extensive coastline and diverse marine habitats, offers a promising setting for this research.
