Sá H. is an Invited Associate Professor with tenure of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (FMUC). She was appointed Diretor of Immunology Center in July 2022.

She graduated in Medicine by FMUC (1988) and completed her PhD in Medicine/ Nephrology at FMUC on January 6th, 2003. She has been na Invited Assistant Professor at FMUC (Immunology) since 2008, na Invited Associate Professor at FMUC and Regent of the Immunology Unit at MIMD since September 2014. She has been Regent of the Immunology Units I and II of the Medicine Master since 2022/23.

She is also a Graduate Assistant of Nephrology at the Nephrology Service of CHUC and Director of the Department of Nephrology and Urology and Renal Transplantation of CHUC.

She was Clinical Director of Hospitals of the University of Coimbra (2003-2005), Sub-Director of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (2009-2012 and 2015). She is a member of the FMUC Pedagogical Council since 2020.

For a decade she was President of the National Dialysis Monitoring Commission of the Ministry of Health (2008-2018).

The primary aim of her scientific research was to evaluate the repercussions of hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis treatments on the immune system of patients with chronic renal insufficiency, while taking into consideration different flow parameters and the biocompatibility of the dialysis membranes. Specifically, she studied the effects of hemodialysis on the morpho-functional characteristics and death of lymphocytes. Her research focused also on the immunology of tissue and organ transplantation and immune tolerance.

Academic and profissional qualifications:

1986-1992 - Degree in Medicine at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences of Abel Salazar, University of Porto.

1995-1998 - Complementary Internship in Ophthalmology at the H.U.C Ophthalmology Service (final classification of 18.9).
1996-1997 - Master’s Degree in Vision Sciences by FMUC at IBILI.

In November 1997 she started teaching practical classes of Immunology to medical students at FMUC, as Invited Assistant. She also worked as a lecturer to Medicine and Dentistry students.
Between August 1999 and June 2000, she worked as an Ophthalmology Assistant at the Ophthalmology Service of the Coimbra Hospital Center. In July 2000 she was a Hospital Assistant of Ophthalmology developing her activity in the areas of Immunopathology, Oncology and Oculoplastic Surgery, while teaching practical classes of Ophthalmology.
In February 2003 she was appointed representative of the Assistants at the meetings of the Coordinating Committee of the Scientific Council of the FMUC for a 2-year period.

Vera Alves is a Senior Technician at the Faculty of Medicine of University of Coimbra (FMUC) and Invited Assistant of Immunology in FMUC. She graduated in Biochemistry in 1991 at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra. She was a collaborator at the Immunology Institute of FMUC from 1991 to 1996. In 1996 she was invited to become Assistant of FMUC. Since 2018, she has also worked as a Senior Technician at FMUC. She is FMUC`s manager of the Cytometry platform. She published 58 articles in specialized journals and received seven prize(s) and/or honors.

Paulo Rodrigues-Santos (PRS) is Head of Research and Science Communication at the Institute of Immunology, Invited Assistant at the Faculty of Medicine and Director of the Immunology and Oncology Laboratory of the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, University of Coimbra (Portugal).

PRS developed his work on Immunogenetics under the supervision of Professor Gottfried Mauff at Institute for Medical Microbiology and Hygiene, Faculty of Medicine, University of Cologne, Germany. He worked on Transplantation Immunobiology as Head of the Functional Genomics Laboratory at the Center for Histocompatibility of the Centre (Coimbra, Portugal).

PRS was Chair of the Education Committee of the European Federation for Immunogenetics (EFI), Board Member of the European Complement Network (ECN) and Vice-President of the Portuguese Society for Immunology (SPI).

He is Founder and Coordinator of the Portuguese Group of Immuno-Oncology (gpI-O), a joint working group of the Portuguese Society for Oncology (SPO) and the Portuguese Society for Immunology (SPI).

Jani Sofia Jesus Almeida (JSA) holds a Master's degree in Biochemistry from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC). For 4 years, she worked as a research technician at the Immunology and Oncology Laboratory (LIO) of the Center for Neurosciences and Cell Biology (CNBC). Currently, JSA is a PhD candidate in Health Sciences, benefiting from a doctoral research scholarship granted by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (FMUC). In order to develop her PhD project, she collaborates with the immunology institute (FMUC) and the LIO. JSA is also an invited assistant at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (FMUC). With a decade of experience in the field of immunology, she has actively participated in collaborations with clinical and research teams, focusing on immunity as a central component in various diseases. JSA has extensive experience in flow cytometry, primarily working with human samples such as peripheral blood and tumors. She has gained experience working with mouse samples, including peripheral blood, thymus, Peyer's patches, and brain. JSA also has experience in molecular biology techniques in whole blood, such as real-time PCR (RT-PCR), and protein analysis by multiplexing in plasma samples. Additionally, JSA demonstrates proficiency in data analysis and statistics.

Leonor Malva Salguinho

Leonor Malva Salguinho, born in Ançã in 1970, has a solid educational background that culminated in a Secretarial Studies Course in 1991. Since 1992, she has played essential roles at the Institute of General Pathology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, contributing to the organization and efficiency of the department. Throughout her career, she has embraced various tasks, including accounting, library management, support for the Chair of Pathophysiology, Immunology and many others, and secretarial work, demonstrating multifaceted skills and remarkable dedication.

Furthermore, she participated in research projects, contributed to the graphic composition of academic publications, and played a crucial role in organizing seminars and meetings.
