An article with the collaboration of the FLOWer Lab has been published in the journal Plant Systematics and Evolution: "Phylogenetic, cytogenetic and morphological evidences are critical for recognizing a new genus: Valdesiana, an Iberian intergeneric allopolyploid between Schenkia and Exaculum".
This study re-evaluates the taxonomy of Schenkia elegans, a recently described endemic in the Iberian Peninsula, and its relationship with the sympatric and morphologically close species Schenkia spicata and Exaculum pusillum.
As a result of the results obtained, a new monotypic genus Valdesiana gen. nov. is proposed to accommodate the allopolyploid species, combined as Valdesiana elegans, for which conservation measures should be urgently evaluated.
This article is the result of a collaboration with the group of Zoila Díaz Lifante and Marcial Escudero from the University of Seville.
