Spectroscopic studies of two comet-asteroid transition objects support dynamical arguments for their origin: 3200 Phaethon is spectrally similar to other asteroids, including “activated asteroids”, and different from comet nuclei, so it probably originated in the main asteroid belt. 944 Hidalgo is spectrally similar to Trojan asteroids and comets and different from main-belt asteroids, its origin is likely cometary.
