The Centre for Neuroscience and Cell Biology of the University of Coimbra (CNC-UC) and the Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research (iCBR), linked by the Centre for Innovation in Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB), are organising several activities throughout the month of March to mark Brain Awareness Week 2024.

Theatre, talks and games are some of the activities that will bring together different generations to discover neuroscience through the research carried out at the University of Coimbra (UC). Brain Awareness Week aims to show society the advances and scientific discoveries made in neuroscience and to promote health literacy related to brain functioning.

Sara Varela Amaral, coordinator of the Science Communication Office at CNC-UC and CIBB, says: "Brain Awareness Week has been an excellent opportunity for us to disseminate neuroscience to different audiences over the last 25 years. This celebration has relied on the extraordinary commitment of our neuroscientists, who have been challenged to communicate their science in the most diverse contexts (schools, bars, radio, parks, buses, exhibitions, theatres, among others). It's an important time of year to convey to society the importance of neuroscience research, a field with a growing social impact nowadays"

Brain Awareness Week is an annual initiative organised by the Dana Foundation and the European Federation of Neuroscience Societies. In Portugal, the week is promoted by the Portuguese Society for Neuroscience and Ciência Viva, with the long-standing engagement of research centres from the University of Coimbra.
