NECTAR – Network for European CNS Transplantation and Restoration is an organisation established in the early 1990s. Every year, it hosts an international meeting where the latest research and technologies in the field are shared. For the first time, the meeting is being held at the University of Coimbra (UC), in collaboration with GeneT: Gene Therapy Center of Excellence Portugal.

Over its 35-year existence, NECTAR “has covered different research areas within the theme of regeneration, from stem cell transplantation to gene therapy,” explains Luís Pereira de Almeida, coordinator of GeneT, “'This edition will have a stronger focus on gene therapy, given the significant successes recently achieved in this area.”

The event features more than 20 speakers of top international standing, who will present the latest results in gene therapy as well as in transplantation. According to Luís Pereira de Almeida, the 35th NECTAR Symposium is “an excellent opportunity to learn about the best work being done in the field of regenerative medicine of the central nervous system.”

“These meetings are very important for people to get to know each other,” he adds. NECTAR brings together researchers, clinicians, and industry representatives, providing opportunities for direct interaction among participants. Such exchanges can facilitate collaborations that may later have a significant impact on the development of new research.

The symposium is also “a good opportunity to showcase our project, GeneT, and to establish partnerships with the scientific community,” concludes Luís Pereira de Almeida.

The meeting is taking place at Colégio da Trindade until Wednesday, 22 October. For more information, visit the NECTAR 2025 website.
