A research team from the Centre for Research in Neuropsychology and Cognitive and Behavioural Intervention (CINEICC) of the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Coimbra (FPCEUC) is conducting a study on some unusual experiences and perceptions that people may encounter.

With this work, the researchers aim to validate an assessment tool for these experiences - called the Community Assessment of Psychic Experiences - and to better understand the role of some psychological dimensions, such as emotional regulation and self-compassion, in the emergence of these experiences, as well as their impact on mental health.

People interested in taking part in the study are invited to complete an online questionnaire (estimated to take 30 minutes, available at https://limesurvey.fpce.uc.pt/limesurvey/index.php/516645). There are only two requirements: you must be between 18 and 65 years old and have Portuguese nationality.

The research team explains that "although these unusual experiences do not in themselves represent a psychopathological condition, they are known to be associated with a higher risk of developing mental health problems. On the other hand, in people who already have mental health problems, these experiences seem to be associated with a worse prognosis". "Therefore, improving our understanding of these experiences could play a significant role in the early detection and prevention of various mental health problems," they conclude.

This work is being carried out as part of the doctoral studies of FPCEUC student Diana Carvalho, under the supervision of FPCEUC professor and CINEICC researcher Paula Castilho.
