Portugal hosts first technical visit from FISU in preparation for World Beach Sports Championships
The delegation held several meetings and visited the venues where the competitions will take place, joined by various representatives and institutional partners.
The first technical visit for the 2026 FISU World University Beach Sports Championships took place in Figueira da Foz from 25 to 27 June. The visit was organised by the Academic Federation of University Sports (FADU) in collaboration with the Academic Association of Coimbra (AAC), the University of Coimbra (UC), and Figueira da Foz City Council.
The delegation’s activities included meetings and venue inspections, attended by representatives from multiple institutions and partners.
In addition to FADU and AAC, the event was attended by Filipa Godinho, Pro-Rector for Sports at the University of Coimbra; Marianna Cardoso, UC Sports Coordinator; representatives of Figueira da Foz City Hall; and members of the Portuguese Handball Federation and the Portuguese Amateur Wrestling Federation.
FISU was represented by several technical coordinators for each sport: Angel Sabio (beach football), Mário Ferro (beach volleyball), Giampiero Masi (beach handball), Pedro Silva (beach wrestling), and Paulo Sivieri (FISU sports coordinator).
Filipa Godinho said that this event “is yet another example of the importance of the work we have been doing at the UC to strengthen our strategic partnerships in both promoting and developing university sports. We want to provide the best conditions for participating athletes and deliver a unique sporting event for the public.”
Running from 18 to 23 August 2026, the event will bring together competitions in beach football, beach volleyball, beach handball, and beach wrestling. Beach tennis is expected to be showcased as a demonstration sport.
Portugal will also host the World University Orienteering Championships in Vila Real.
