FMUC professor and student distinguished at the European Society of Cardiology congress

Lino Gonçalves, Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (FMUC), and Patrícia Barros da Silva, 5th-year student of the Master's degree in Medicine, will be distinguished at the next edition of the European Society of Cardiology congress (ESC, which will be held in Paris from the 31st August to 4th September. The faculty member will receive the ESC Silver Medal, while the student will deliver one of four oral communications competing for the “Best Research Abstract from the Young” award.

Lino Gonçalves has been awarded the Silver Medal of the European Society of Cardiology for the second time and will receive the honour at the opening ceremony of the congress. The award recognises the significant contribution made by the FMUC Professor to training, accrediting, certifying and improving the quality of cardiology training in Europe.

Patrícia Barros da Silva will present the communication “Stroke after Mitraclip: systematic review and meta-analysis”, chosen among over 1,200 submissions from all over the world for the “Best Research Abstract from the Young” Award. This work was carried out in the framework of the course Vascular and Thoracic Cardiology, under the supervision of Rogério Teixeira, Lino Gonçalves e José Pedro Sousa and counted with the cooperation of Bárbara Oliveiros and Helena Donato. The main goal was to assess the risk of strokes in patients with an implant in the mitral valve, an innovative and emerging treatment for mitral insufficiency.

The European Society of Cardiology Congress is the world's largest scientific meeting in the cardiovascular field. The 2019 edition will run in parallel with the World Congress of Cardiology, involving around 32,000 health professionals from 150 countries.
