The flowerbeds between the University of Coimbra’s (UC) Department of Physics and Department of Chemistry will soon be more colourful. In line with its commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the enhancement of natural heritage, the University of Coimbra has recently formalised a cooperation agreement with the environmental project Jardim Monte Formoso (Monte Formoso Garden).

The partnership aims to engage the academic community in the regeneration of campus spaces through volunteering, environmental awareness, and hands-on learning. Its goal is to reintroduce native species, contribute to the preservation of Portugal’s indigenous flora, and promote biodiversity and wellbeing through low-impact solutions, such as the use of ollas (traditional infiltration irrigation systems).

The first activity, which will focus on the restoration and revitalisation of the flowerbeds located between the Physics and Chemistry departments at Campus I of the UC, will take place on 8 November. This will contribute to the enhancement of Portugal's natural heritage and promote environmental sustainability values, as well as improve the functionality and enjoyment of public spaces.

To this end, the Jardim Monte Formoso environmental project is assembling a team of volunteers from across the academic community. Tasks will include clearing and removing invasive species, planting, sowing and transplanting, watering and maintenance, as well as monitoring and recording the growth of the plants.

Registration is available here.
