On November 17, Coimbra will host the ATMP Summit, organized by the European Advanced Translational Medical Research Infrastructure (EATRIS) and co-organized by the University of Coimbra (UC). The meeting will take place at the Pedro Nunes Institute (IPN) between 9:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m., focusing on the development and impact of advanced therapies based on genes, tissues, or cells.

Under the theme The importance of advanced therapies in the current context, the meeting will welcome 16 national and international speakers from academia and regulatory bodies in the fields of health and industry, such as the vice president of INFARMED, Carlos Lima Alves, and researchers Sheila Mikhail and Jude Samulski, who are involved in gene therapy.

The sessions will focus on the latest scientific advances in Portugal in translational research, innovation, manufacturing, regulation, and future guidelines for advanced therapy medicines. Alongside the debate on the main challenges and opportunities in the area, an exhibition of companies will highlight the Portuguese industry active in this field, with the presence of several companies.

The ATMP Summit will bring together researchers, biotechnology companies, regulators, doctors, patient representatives, and the general public. The event aims to promote knowledge exchange, collaboration, and real-world impact, reinforcing Portugal's role in the European ecosystem of innovative therapies. Participation is free, but subject to prior registration by November 10 at https://ls.uc.pt/index.php/575513.

The president of the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology at UC (CNC-UC) and GeneT: Center of Excellence in Gene Therapy, Luís Pereira de Almeida; the director of Innovation at IPN, Jorge Pimenta; Ricardo Silva, researcher at the Institute of Experimental and Technological Biology (iBET); Sílvia Almeida, Scientific Director of AccelBio; and Patrícia Dias, coordinator of the Clinical Trials Center of the Coimbra Local Health Unit, are other speakers at the event, representing organizations that are part of the European consortium EATRIS.

The ATMP Summit is held in the context of EATRIS Spotlight, a year-long program dedicated to showcasing the best in translational medicine in Portugal, following the country's accession to the European entity EATRIS in July 2019. The event in Coimbra is co-organized by CNC-UC and the national entities of the consortium.
