The General Council of the University of Coimbra has announced the call for applications to the second edition of the J. Norberto Pires Innovation Award. Proposals can be submitted as of today, the 20th of July until the 30th of September.

Launched in 2022 as a tribute to the late UC Professor and researcher Joaquim Norberto Pires, the award aims to encourage and recognise innovative initiatives designed and developed by students, technical staff, faculty and researchers of the University of Coimbra (UC), or people with any sort of academic or professional affiliation with the UC.

The initiatives or innovation projects submitted may be from several areas, including scientific, cultural, artistic, business, social, financial, management, governance, internal organisation or business ideas, (pedagogical initiatives excluded).

"This Award is further proof of the UC commitment to innovation, of its community, especially researchers and teachers, whilst also paying a well-deserved tribute", said the Rector of the University of Coimbra, Amílcar Falcão.

The President of the General Council of the UC, Gabriela Figueiredo Dias states that this award "is a recognition of Professor Joaquim Norberto Pires' path, which inevitably had to have as a premise the recognition of the innovation developed at the UC".

The jury is composed of members affiliated with the UC, as well as external elements of recognised merit in different areas of knowledge. The project selected by the jury will receive €6,000 - or €3,000 should there be two winning proposals.

The award ceremony for the J. Norberto Pires Innovation Award will take place on the 5th of December 2023 in Coimbra, at São Francisco Convent.

In its first edition, in 2022, the Prize was awarded to the "NerveGen" project, which developed a 3D printing solution for the production of biodegradable medical devices for peripheral nerve regeneration.
