The General Council of the University of Coimbra (UC) has announced the opening of applications for the fourth edition of the J. Norberto Pires Innovation Award. Applications are open until 30 June for innovation initiatives or projects in the scientific, cultural, artistic, entrepreneurial, social or financial fields.

Launched in 2022 as a tribute to the late UC Professor and researcher Joaquim Norberto Pires, the award aims to encourage and recognise innovative initiatives designed and developed by students, technical staff, faculty and researchers of the University of Coimbra (UC), or those with academic or professional links to the UC.

According to UC Rector Amílcar Falcão, “This award recognises the many innovative ideas that emerge every year at the University of Coimbra. Since the first edition, we have been honouring projects with huge potential. I hope and believe that we will receive many high-quality applications again this year.”

The President of the UC General Council, Maria da Glória Garcia, adds: “Acknowledging the merit of innovative initiatives and the diverse projects generated within the University of Coimbra has a powerful dynamic effect on the institution and provides an incentive to always strive for more.”

The jury comprises members affiliated with the UC, along with external figures of recognised merit across various fields of knowledge. The winning project will receive €6,000 – or €3,000 each, in the case of two winning entries.

The J. Norberto Pires Innovation Award ceremony will take place on the 8th of October.
