The Societies and Environmental Sustainability Research Group at the Centre for Functional Ecology – Science for People & the Planet at the University of Coimbra, and its extension at the Open University of Portugal, is proud to share the most recent achievement of our member Gerson de Freitas Júnior, now a Doctor in Social Sustainability and Development from the Open University and an integrated researcher within this group!
His thesis, entitled “Forests as a Heuristic Tool for Discussing Societies and Social Sustainability in the Sustainable and Healthy Territories of Bocaina”, was supervised by Professors Fátima Alves and Paula Castro and represents a valuable contribution to understanding the interrelationships between communities, forests, and social sustainability.
The examination board was chaired by Maria João Cunha de Oliveira, a professor at the Open University of Portugal, with the main examiners being Professor Luís Venturi (University of São Paulo) and Professor Gilberto Fisch (University of Taubaté). The board also included members João Aldeia and Diogo Guedes Vidal, both professors at the Open University of Portugal and researchers in our research group.
Congratulations, Gerson! We are confident that your work will inspire new reflections and practices towards more sustainable and healthy territories!
