On 27 November, Fátima Alves from the Societies and Environmental Sustainability Research Group at the Centre for Functional Ecology - Science for People & the Planet, Laboratório Associado Terra at the University of Coimbra and its extension at the Open University of Portugal, acted as Chair at the World PhD Students and Postdoctoral Researchers Summit: Meeting the Challenges of Climate Change 2024. The event was held online and organised by HAW Hamburg and NetCda.

This international event highlighted doctoral students' and postdoctoral researchers' fundamental role in responding to climate change's impacts through interdisciplinary approaches. Despite the synergies between different research areas, many researchers still face challenges related to collaboration and the exchange of knowledge. This third edition of the event aimed to overcome these barriers, creating a dynamic global dialogue and collaboration platform and providing a space for sharing innovative ideas.
Also at the same event and on the same day, doctoral student and researcher Nidia Ponte from the Societies and Environmental Sustainability Research Group at the Centre for Functional Ecology—Science for People & the Planet, Laboratório Associado Terra at the University of Coimbra and its extension at the Universidade Aberta de Portugal, presented her doctoral project, which FCT funded.

Project theme:

  • ‘Climate Change and Health: Strategies for Intercultural Dialogue between Health Professionals and Patients’, which is being developed within the PhD in Intercultural Relations framework at the Open University of Portugal, with supervision by Fátima Alves and Diogo Guedes Vidal.

Project Highlights:

  • This research proposes new ways to promote intercultural dialogue in health, analysing how sociocultural diversity can strengthen resilience in the face of health risks related to climate change. The project focuses on Porto's health system. It aims to inform public health policies and empower professionals to deal with the health impacts of climate change.
