PHOENIX Interview: How to Include Non-Humans and the Future in Participatory Processes.

In this interview, within the context of Societies and Environmental Sustainability Research Line of the Centre for Functional Ecology - Science for People & the Planet participation in the European project Phoenix H2020, researcher Diogo Guedes Vidal discusses the relationship between humans and non-humans and reflects on ways to make participatory processes more inclusive. When certain voices are silenced, it harms their interests and puts the planet and its future at risk. In addition to historically marginalized groups and communities, it is also important to recognize and consider the representation of non-humans and future generations. By recognizing this imperative, a moral responsibility emerges to act sensibly, prioritize justice and empathy, and pursue the common good in participatory processes. The ecological transition should emphasize transparency, accommodate different communication styles and needs, and recognize the importance of non-human interests and future generations in decision-making processes.
