The Centre for Functional Ecology – Science for People & the Planet, in partnership with the Serralves Foundation, is organising the Park Conference, to be held on 30 and 31 October 2025 in Porto.

In this edition, the study “The Portuguese and Nature” will be presented — a nationwide survey that analyses the representations, meanings and emotions associated with nature and biodiversity in Portugal.

The project, coordinated by Fátima Alves (PI) and developed by a CFE team comprising Diogo Guedes Vidal, Rosário Rosa, Ana Mendonça, João Aldeia, Teresa Girão, Filipa Saraiva and Helena Freitas (CFE Coordinator), forms part of the activities of the Societies and Environmental Sustainability Research Group (CFE-UC). The study seeks to understand how Portuguese women and men relate to nature and its elements — across knowledge, emotion and action — contributing to fairer and more sustainable policies.

Based on a representative sample of 1,040 participants, the survey reveals the diversity of perceptions and emotions shaping the relationship of Portuguese people with nature, spanning wellbeing, ecological awareness and the challenges of the socio-ecological transition.

The Park Conference is intended as a space for encounter and dialogue between science, culture and citizenship, promoting reflection on ways to reconnect societies and ecosystems.
