The University of Coimbra's Health and Occupational Safety Management Services have a number of health professionals from different areas with the training and experience to deal with situations that are particularly common among the younger population: General Practitioners, who are the first point of contact on the main occasions; Psychiatrists and Psychologists, organised in the Young University Consultation; Nurses.

The University of Coimbra's Health and Labour Safety Management Services are promoting the free distribution of contraceptive methods to students. Some types of "pills", vaginal rings, intrauterine devices, implants and condoms are available. Emergency contraception ("morning after pill") is also available.

The morning-after pill is an emergency medicine used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or when the contraceptive method used has failed.

After unprotected sex, the morning-after pill should be taken as soon as possible, as its effectiveness decreases over time. Maximum efficacy extends to 72 hours (3 days), but it can be taken for up to 120 hours (5 days), albeit with reduced efficacy.

We have daily nursing services, able to administer injections (vaccines, medicines, etc.), make dressings, remove stitches resulting from surgery. We also check blood pressure, pulse, weight and height. The University of Coimbra's Health and Occupational Safety Management Services have a consultation room for issuing medical certificates for driving licences and physical strength certificates for scholarship holders wishing to join the Voluntary Social Security scheme. Those interested undergo a preliminary assessment by a nurse, by appointment, which includes visual tests, pulse and blood pressure checks. In a second phase, they will be seen by a doctor, who may or may not require other tests in order to issue the required certificate.

We offer students and workers a Travel Medicine Consultation which allows them to obtain specialised information on the health risks related to their travels, obtaining medical advice oriented towards the attitudes and preventive measures to be followed before, during and after the trip. Users who take chronic medication and who already have an up-to-date medical history at the Health Services can request that their prescription be renewed. All they have to do is go to the Secretariat or send the request to saude@sas.uc.pt, using the document below.

As this is a clinical act, the doctor will decide whether or not to issue the requested prescription.

Doctors from the University of Coimbra's Health and Occupational Safety Management Services are authorised to issue requisitions for clinical analyses that can be carried out at the UC Clinical Analysis Laboratory.
