Art-historical characterisation
The construction of the Casa das Caldeiras began in 1941, as part of the modernisation and expansion of the thermal energy generating infrastructure for the University Hospitals. One of the rare repositories of Coimbra's industrial heritage, it has a modern, sober and functional architectural lexicon, reflecting its original functions.
As part of the restoration and reintegration of the building, the original architectural structures were maintained: the interior layout, the accesses, the large windows and the tall chimney, as well as most of the machinery, with the two large boilers, acquired in 1939 from the English firm S.E. de C. Babcock & Wilcox.
Casa das Caldeiras is now the headquarters of the Centre Regional Section of the Portuguese Architects' Association (OASRC), and also a bar-cafeteria.
