R&D International Networks at the University of Coimbra is proud to host the European Conference BME- IDEA 2021

BME-IDEA was started in 2003 at the University of Stanford when a group of professors who were teaching design in a Biomedical Engineering department or program realized that there were common needs among them that were not being met by current conference offerings. The first BME-IDEA meeting was held in San Francisco in 2003 and the alliance has met annually or bi-annually ever since. In 2013, the first Europe BME-IDEA meeting was held among programs there. The goals of the alliance are to:

  • Review the experiences of different university programs involved in innovation, design, technology transfer and entrepreneurship in biomedical engineering education
  • Discuss objectives, challenges, and opportunities for further development of these programs – including industry and academic perspectives
  • Explore the potential for sharing resources and creating community–wide tools (e.g., web portal, national design contest, etc.)

This year, due to the covid pandemy and the difficulties that some partners still have regarding traveling abroad due to sanitary restrictions the 2021 BME IDEA Europe Conference will take place online in the form of several 1,5h webinars. The transversal theme for all webinars will be Biodesign Local Ecosystems guided tours. There is the opportunity to have a flavour of local ecosystems (organizations, innovation players, Innovation pipeline, etc.) and learn something beyond the programs. The idea is not to only present each Biodesign program per se but to focus on the environment that surrounds the program as well as faced challenges and solutions. The sessions will focus in common topics such as:

  • Local innovation ecosystem
  • Main features of Biodesign program and how they interlink to the ecosystem
  • Main challenges and ways of overcoming them

The webinars will take place during October and November and as from the experience from last editions it is a great oportunity to exchange knowledge with participants and to network.
