Miguel Castelo-Branco

Research at the service of human life

Miguel Castelo-Branco is a professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra and scientific coordinator of the Centre for Biomedical Imaging and Translational Research (CIBIT) of the Institute for Nuclear Sciences Applied to Health (ICNAS) of the University of Coimbra. Curiosity about the human being has been the key to his academic and professional choices. His curiosity extends not only to the functional and disruptive nature of the human being but also to its personal and professional value in people's lives. Today, years after leaving clinical practice to devote himself to research, he has made several discoveries and won prestigious awards such as the BIAL Prize for Clinical Medicine 2022. For the neuroscientist, the real impact of research on the lives of patients and their families is as important as the scientific discoveries. His career has also highlighted the important role of interdisciplinarity, a commitment that has allowed different fields of knowledge to interact and create synergies for the benefit of people's quality of life.
