The project POMBALIA - POMBAL GLOBAL, promoted by the University of Coimbra and the Instituto Europeu de Ciências da Cultura Padre Manuel Antunes (IECCPMA), has just surpassed 16,000 records in the digital collection created for its dissemination. The project aims at publishing the full work of Marquês de Pombal (Obra Completa Pombalina), critically annotated and commented, in order to make it accessible to the Portuguese-speaking public and throughout the Lusophone world.

Besides committing itself to publishing the complete works of Pombal, the UC was also charged with guaranteeing the conditions to host the database with the references of the primary documentary sources collected by the researchers involved, making them publicly available. The technical work that made it possible to complete and put into production the "POMBALIA - POMBAL GLOBAL" sources roadmap was carried out by the UC General Library team, with the support of UC Framework.

The project, signed in 2019, has a duration of five years and the scientific coordination by Professor José Eduardo Franco, together with Professors Viriato Soromenho-Marques and Pedro Calafate. It involves a broad group of researchers to identify all Pombaline documentation, scattered across more than 100 libraries and archives in various countries, such as Portugal and Brazil, but also Spain, France, England, Austria, Russia, India, China, Japan, the United States, Argentina, Angola, among others. The roadmap of sources created corresponds to what was requested to the UC by the project coordinators, and all the information is publicly available, with a total of over 16,000 records. The expectation is to integrate close to 40,000 records, which have already been identified by the researchers.

The "Obra Completa Pombalina" aims to overcome the lack of an edition of the entire work of the Marquis of Pombal, a decisive personality in the history of Portugal, through the survey of all his written work - or work directly inspired by him. The project also aims to contribute to the dissemination of lesser known aspects of the personality, life and work of the statesman - particularly as a reformer of the State - and the role he played in the reconstruction of Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake.

The items of the collection already available can be explored by type (manuscripts, printed matter, modern books), date and location.

International representation

Last July, the POMBALIA project was presented during the International Colloquium Digitizing Enlightenment V, which took place in Montpellier, France. UC was represented by Dr. Ana Miguéis, from the General Library, who accompanied Prof. José Eduardo Franco and Prof. Aida Sampaio Lemos in a joint presentation, which took place at the opening of the Colloquium.

The presentation approached the component of the project related to the creation and hosting of the roadmap of sources on Pombal, and reinforced the information that this tool is able to receive all the information related to the documentation identified by the researchers, close to 40.000 documents.

The presentation in the Colloquium will be published as an article in a thematic dossier of the Revue Transdisciplinaire Global18. The publication is planned for the end of 2022.
