Registrations are now open for the OPERAS Conference 2020, which will take place between 2-4 November on Zoom. The theme for this year is “Opening up Social Sciences and Humanities in Europe: From Promises to Reality”. The conference aims at being a discussion hub, in which different players such as researchers, decision makers, publishers and librarians can share and compare their take on the currently scholarly communication system and their vision for a sustainable future.

Considering the creation of European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) as a booster for Open Science in Europe, the event highlights a part of its Declaration that says that “no disciplines (...) must be left behind”. And as an infrastructure for the Humanities and Social Sciences in Europe, the OPERAS event asks: are the social sciences and humanities ready for the EOSC? To what extent are Open Science and FAIR practices already in place? What role can research infrastructures and disciplinary communities play to support an effective shift towards Open Science?

This second Annual Conference of OPERAS will outline the current situation of scholarly communication in the social sciences and humanities (SSH) in Europe and how it can adopt widely openness as a normal practice. Among the issues to be discussed in the conference, there are: the challenges preventing SSH researchers to adopt openness as a normal scholarly communication practice; how the OPERAS community can help; how open science policies and frameworks – for example Plan S and EOSC – could be adopted by SSH communities; and how to increase the impact of SSH research on societies. Besides, the workshops and panels will also address the researchers needs and visions regarding infrastructures, services and policies, and discuss themes as the future for books and sustainable models in publishing in the new context.

The keynote presentation will be hosted by Johan Rooryck, professor at Leiden University and Executive Director of cOAlition S, and will discuss “Scientific communities and infrastructures: a personal perspective”. Among the speakers is also the Vice-Rector of UC for Culture and Open Science, Delfim Leão, who will speak on Multilingualism during the Panel "Research Infrastructure OPERAS in 90 ': Mission, Vision, Action", on November 3rd.

The full program of the conference and complete information on the speakers are available at the official website.
