It takes place, on September 21, the "2020 Workshop Multilingualism", an event that will bring together editors, translators, librarians, junior researchers and other interested partners to exchange experiences about multilingualism. Registration for participation is free, but limited to 200 places - the initial number of places, of 100 people, has been increased due to the high demand.

The workshop will focus particularly on the challenges of Open Access in academic publishing and possible lobbying strategies. Four major themes guide the course: the balance between localization and globalization (relevance of local and international research and research impact); the question of translation - translation and translators as an "invisible contribution" or recognized in its own right, and the authority of automated translators; specific challenges of open access around multilingualism; and hegemonic challenges with regard to languages. This last topic includes issues such as linguistic hegemony and dominance in multilingual contexts, minorities and native languages as a cultural trait, dominance of Latin alphabet requirements in scientific communication aggregators, and dominance of the concept of a lingua franca, like English.

The full program, which takes place from 10 am to 12 pm and from 1 pm to 3 pm, is available on the website of the European Association of University Publishers (AEUP). Registrations can be made on the Eventbrite platform.

Among the eight speakers who will debate the topics proposed in the program, is the Vice-Rector of UC, Delfim Leão, who will speak about the research "Multilingualism in Scholarly Communication", carried out by the Special Interest Group of OPERAS. Delfim Leão is also a member of the UNESCO Advisory Committee on Open Science.

The 2020 workshop on Multilingualism is a satellite event of the OASPA Conference (Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association) 2020. It is organized multi-institutionally by the Helsinki Initiative for Multilingualism, the Finnish Association for Academic Publication, the OPERAS Special Interest Group, the European Network for the Evaluation of Research in Social and Human Sciences (ENRESSH), the Finnish Federation of Learned Societies and AEUP.
