The European Researchers' Night (Noite Europeia dos Investigadores - NEI) returns to the UC in 2021 under the theme SCICLI - Science for Climate | Ciência para o Clima. The University's representative in the consortium, formed by 9 institutions, is the Institute of Interdisciplinary Research (iiiUC). The event takes place on 24 September and receives proposals for activities until this Friday, 06 August.

The motto for this year's event is: how can science contribute to knowledge about the causes and effects of climate change and climate neutrality by 2050? Facing this question, the objectives of the European Researchers' Night 2021 are "to promote the awareness of citizens, especially the youngest, for research and innovation committed to the development of technology, industry and green transport, as well as the preservation of ecosystems and natural resources".

At the UC, the iiiUC proposal for the afternoon and evening of September 24 is to promote the "Science Route", in collaboration with the UC Science Museum, R&D units and several Science centres of the University. The activities will put together the University and the downtown of Coimbra, bringing together researchers, citizens and several partners of the consortium.

The activities proposals may consist of face-to-face or online initiatives.

Besides the activities in Coimbra, NEI 2021 will take place in Lisbon, Braga and Évora, in addition to the online programme.

Submission of proposals

The activities of the face-to-face program of NEI 2021 at the UC will take place outdoors in a Science Route in the city of Coimbra, interacting directly with the population and the "Conimbricenses". The activities will rely on the safety regulations of the Direção Geral de Saúde (DGS) in force in face of the pandemic situation.

The submitted activities (both online and face-to-face) will be evaluated based on five criteria:

1) approach to the project theme;

2) interactivity with the public;

3) diversity of institutions present;

4) diversity;

5) originality.

The representatives of the online proposals will be contacted during August about the result of the submissions, and the proponents of the in-person activities will be contacted in early September.

Volunteering at UC

As part of the preparation for the event, UC is looking for PhD students who wish to volunteer to support the Science Route in the city, on 24 September. Students will also be able to present their project in a Speed Dating format.

The call for volunteers is now open and can be accessed here.

Pre-event

Before September 24, NEI will be hosting three initiatives:

- "Day before the Night": action to be held in schools in the Coimbra region; UC researchers will take practical activities related to their research to schools.

- "Fridays of Science": initiative in the streets of downtown Coimbra, on Friday afternoons (3, 10 and 17 September), with the development of "mini-science shows".

- Online Open Day: Online activities event for schools on September 21st.
