This Wednesday, June 23, the Memorandum of Understanding establishing the partnership of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) with the European Commission, under the Horizon Europe Framework Programme, was signed. The signing took place during the European Commission's flagship Research and Innovation event, the European Research and Innovation Days.

The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) is a key component to realising the EC’s Open Science policy, providing a European Research Data Commons where data are findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable (FAIR), thus enabling interdisciplinary and impactful science in the digital age. The term establishing the partnership was signed by the president of the EOSC Association, Karel Luyben, on behalf of the EOSC, and by the Commissioners for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Mariya Gabriel, and for Internal Market, Thierry Breton, on behalf of the European Commission.

The partnership represents a new governance model for the EOSC, firmly positioning stakeholders across Europe in the driving seat, and will be an essential ingredient in changing the way research is conducted. Based on the EOSC's Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda, the partnership has a set of key objectives to ensure that standards are defined, and services and tools developed to allow researchers to find, access, reuse and combine results from all areas of investigation; Open Science practices and skills become the new normal and are rewarded and taught across Europe; and to establish a sustainable and federated infrastructure enabling open sharing of scientific results.

As stated by the EOSC official announcement of the partnership, the EC supports an Open Science policy that builds trust in a digitally enabled and more open and robust research process not only for scientists, but also for society at large. EOSC provides the enabling infrastructure for this to happen and seeks to transform European Science. The partnership represents a strong commitment from all sides and every corner of Europe as the region joins together to make impact science possible in the digital age.

The University of Coimbra is a member of the EOSC Association and is committed to the principles of Open Science in the different stages of research, as well as in the development of scientific careers.
