Researchers@Schools is one initiative of the Science for Global Challenges (SCIGLO) project, which also organizes the European Researchers' Night in four Portuguese cities, including Coimbra. This project invites schools to welcome and collaborate with researchers.
The objectives of this program are:
- To develop activities within the school community that create playful and learing opportunities for students;
- To promote a closer relationship between the school community and science;
- To enhance scientific literacy by engaging students, teachers, and researchers in collaborative projects;
- To raise awareness of the role of scientific careers in addressing global challenges.
The University of Coimbra, through its Institute of Interdisciplinary Research, encourages these initiative in schools across the Coimbra region for students of all ages, with a particular focus on middle school and high school students.
Two formats of school activities are available:
- Modality A (Short-term activities), which consists on visits, lectures, workshops, or hands-on activities conducted at schools in the Coimbra region (involving one or more classes).
- Modality B (Long-term projects), which involves the development of projects carried out by a group of students from schools in the Coimbra region in direct collaboration with UC researchers. This modality includes an initial presentation of the projects at schools to engage students for the project, followed by activities held at schools and research centers throughout the academic year. Projects conclude with a presentation of results (with the support of researchers) at the European Researchers' Night in 2025. The best project will receive a honorary prize for the school.
Modality A comprises 64 activites, and Modality B 24 projects, covering a wide range of scientific fields.
The complete list of activities can be found here.
Teachers and schools’ administrastions of the Coimbra region can register for this initiative through this form.
