The submission of the doctoral thesis is a key milestone in the academic journey and follows specific rules and procedures established by the University of Coimbra. While the process is generally standardized, some details may vary depending on the Faculty/Organizational Unit (OU) and the academic year. It is therefore essential to consult the official institutional information carefully.
Steps and Procedures:
- Enrollment and Fee Payment. Before submitting the thesis, the student must be enrolled in the current academic year and have tuition fees fully paid.
- Electronic Submission. The thesis must be submitted in PDF format via InforEstudante, under the option Academic service » Submit diss./Thesis.
- Hard Copy Submission. After the electronic submission, printed copies of the thesis may need to be submitted, according to the guidelines of the relevant Organizational Unit.
- Special Submission Regime. In case of late submission, students may need to formally request a special thesis submission regime, which must be justified and approved by the Organizational Unit.
- Process Tracking. The entire process, from submission to public defense, can be tracked by the student through the InforEstudante platform.
Deadlines
The usual deadline for thesis submission is August 31 of the current academic year. If the defense occurs after September 30, registration for the following academic year and proportional tuition payment may be required.
Deadlines may vary by Organizational Unit and academic year, so students are advised to consult the relevant academic calendars.

Tuition Fees
Tuition Reduction for Part-Time Enrollment - At the University of Coimbra (UC), students may choose to enroll on a part-time basis, which results in a reduced tuition fee. Part-time status is automatically recognized by the InforEstudante system, provided that the student enrolls in a total of 30 ECTS or fewer per academic year (or 15 ECTS per semester). Part-time students pay 60% of the tuition fee applicable to full-time students. This benefit cannot be combined with other tuition reduction schemes offered by UC.
