Evidence-Based Dentistry (MDBE) consists of an interventional analytical algorithm that allows the clinician to answer questions based on the best scientific evidence, integrating it with their clinical experience and considering the best interests of patients. Currently there are tools that allow the practice of MDBE in all areas of medical intervention, namely: etiology, diagnosis, therapy, prognosis, and quality of life. Evidence-based medicine is a methodology based on five steps: questioning something questionable; seek out, critically evaluate, and apply evidence; and, finally, analyze the final result. The practice of MDBE requires specific training, and therefore lacks a theoretical-practical base with regular updates. However, its application in the medical sciences is currently an essential paradigm for the qualitative harmonization of clinical practice. |

The Laboratory for Evidence-Based Sciences and Precision Dentistry (LACBE – MDP) is a research group at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, created with the aim of disseminating the principles of evidence-based Dentistry in the scientific community and society, and allow start the application of precision dentistry. These models based on artificial intelligence algorithms propose the personalization of treatment in dentistry, with clinical decisions, practices, interventions and/or products adapted to the specificities of the patient based on the prediction of their risk of disease and their response to treatment.LACBE-MDP has already established partnerships with other similar units from international universities and aims to create scientific knowledge in the field of Dentistry for public and private, national and international entities. |

This laboratory aims to research, development, and dissemination of knowledge in Dentistry based on evidence of the best scientific quality. In addition, it is intended to be recognized as a center of excellence in the production of high-quality information in the various areas of Dentistry, with added value applicability in the network of the public and private health system of this specialty.
This laboratory also intends to develop basic training for dentists and organize various workshops and work meetings to discuss different topics. The development of this laboratory will be consolidated with the establishment of synergisms between other national and international Evidence-Based Medicine centers and with the close collaboration with the Documentation Service of the Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de Coimbra. If, on the one hand, it is LACBE – MDP's objective to invest in this training at a postgraduate level, it is still a priority to strive for the introduction, from the early years of undergraduate education, of Units with gradual and progressive differentiation.
Mission
- Produce independent, relevant, and high-quality scientific knowledge to support decision-making in the medical-dental clinical areas.
- Contribute to the definition of evidence-based health policies and to increase society's health literacy.
- Provide evidence-based science skills in the field of Dentistry through training, scientific methodology courses and thematic workshops.
- Promote the work of teams from different institutions, encouraging the creation of research networks.
- Foster the dissemination of scientific evidence through the publication of scientific articles in national and international journals and the presentation of works at national and international conferences.
- Implement precision dentistry as a management model that proposes the personalization of treatment, with clinical decisions, practices and/or products adapted to the patient.
- Contribute to the translation of scientific knowledge to the practical needs and concerns of the population, translating the results of scientific evidence into clinical practice.
