Study Programme

The work developed by a student during one academic year, according to the indicative plan of the course and on a full time basis, totals 60 ECTS.

General Objectives of the Course
To train MDs of Sports Medicine, so that they can evaluate athletes and others dedicated to Sports and Physical Activity. This Master aims to provide theoretical and practical contents in the scope of sports medicine and physical activity, with strong clinical and healthcare motivations, as well as allowing for the development of research in this area. It favours the understanding of biological phenomena arising from a certain level of physical performance, as well as the most relevant organic adaptations. It aims to develop clinical aspects arising from sports, referencing different structures, organs and organic systems, providing the specifics of the clinical history, semiotic exploration, diagnostic development, additional exams, therapeutics and prognosis (functional and vital). It also aims to promote health education, considering the physical activity as a therapeutic element in multiple diseases.

Admission Requirements
Candidates to the master’s degree may be:
a) holders of a Bachelor’s degree or legal equivalent;
b) holders of a foreign higher academic degree, that was awarded after accomplishing a 1st cycle of studies, which should be structured according to the principles of the Bologna Process in an adhering country to this Process;
c) holders of a foreign higher academic degree that is recognised to meet the objectives of the Bachelor’s degree by the legal competent Scientific Council of the Higher Education Institution to which they want to be admitted.
d) holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum, which is recognised as attesting the capacity to accomplish this cycle of studies by the legal competent Scientific Council of the Higher Education Institution to which they want to be admitted.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills
This Master aims to provide theoretical and practical contents in the scope of sports medicine and physical activity, with strong clinical and healthcare motivations, as well as allowing for the development of research in this area.
Knowledge is focused on Sport in the courses of Physiology, Nutrition, Pharmacology, Pulmonology, Cardiology, Psychology, Neurotraumatology, Ortho-traumatology, rehabilitation and Seminars (in Dermatology, Urology, Ophthalmology, Endocrinology and Exercise Prescription) - 10 courses with lectures, theoretical-practical and practical lessons.
Skills acquired in this Master are recognized by the Portuguese Medical Association and the Portuguese College of Sport Medicine since the postgraduate training made in the first two semesters (60 ECTS) is considered by the Medical - Specialty College of Sports Medicine, as one of the necessary elements for admission to examination in the specialty of Sports Medicine. Students are also encouraged to attend medical and surgical services with linked with Sports. On the other hand, many of the students are already doctors of sports clubs and improve their training and others with this Master are admitted in the clubs; students also gain eligibility for medical and sports exam.
Students acquire the skills necessary to the function of Sports Medicine. They are trained in preventive medicine, diagnoses and treatments in Sports Medicine and related areas, being also able to rationally promote physical exercise as a mandatory therapy.
Each module promotes knowledge, skills and competences through lectures in the classrooms and problem-based teaching or clinical cases, with a final evaluation in each module. The final grade takes into account these parameters, serving as an effective measurement.
