Felisbela Lopes gives Opening Lecture of the school year at FEUC

In order to mark the beginning of the new academic year and to mobilize the academic community, the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra (FEUC) has planned a varied program of activities to welcome and integrate students, to be carried out in its spaces. The initiatives last for four weeks, starting on 12 September.

FEUC's objective is to re-establish face-to-face dynamics, attract students and appeal to the involvement of the entire FEUC community and entities that are related to it. In this regard, the debate around the great issues of our time is crucial, first of all because of the interpellation that launches us to reflect on our common future, mirrored, for example, in the way public space is animated by opinion makers who, making use of their specialized knowledge, provide us with interpretive codes of reality.

In this sense, on the 21st of September, at 5 pm, in the FEUC Auditorium, Professor Felisbela Lopes, a well-recognized personality within and outside the academic world, will deliver the opening lecture for the 2022/23 academic year, entitled “The place of specialists in the public (media) space”. The conference will be closed by the Magnificent Rector of UC, Amílcar Falcão.

Professor Felisbela Lopes is an associate professor at the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Minho. She holds a PhD in Communication Sciences from the same university and, between 2009 and 2014, was Pro-Rector for the area of ​​Communication. Since the beginning of her academic career, she has taught subjects related to journalism and public space. Her research areas are television information, with a focus on public media service; health communication and journalism; and political journalism, focusing on media coverage of the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic. She was principal investigator of two FCT-funded research projects: “The Disease in the News” and “Television journalism and citizenship: the challenges of the public sphere in the digital age”.

She is the author of several books, among which Marcelo, Presidente dos dias (Porto Editora, 2019) stands out; Journalist: a threatened profession (Alêtheia, 2015); Twenty Years of Private TV in Portugal (Editora Guerra e Paz, 2012); Real TV (Minerva, 2008); The TV of the Elites (Campo das Letras, 2007).

She is RTP's resident commentator for communication issues and a columnist for various media outlets.
