biographical note

Boaventura de Sousa Santos is a professor in Sociology of Law at Yale University, a retired professor at the Faculty of Economics at the University of Coimbra and a distinguished legal scholar at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was also a global legal scholar at the University of Warwick and a visiting professor at Birkbeck College, University of London. He directed the ALICE research project - Strange mirrors, unforeseen lessons: defining for Europe a new way of sharing experiences with the world, a project funded by the European Research Council (ERC), one of the most prestigious and competitive international funding for research of excellence in European space.

He is director emeritus of the Center for Social Studies at the University of Coimbra and scientific coordinator of the Permanent Observatory of Justice.

Research topics: Epistemology, sociology of law, post-colonial theory, democracy, interculturality, globalization, social movements, human rights.

His books have been published in Portuguese, English, Italian, Spanish, German, French and Chinese.
