Experts reflect on security and migration in the EU

The workshop “European Security, Borders, Crime and EU Law” took place on June 18, 2024. It aimed to foster a qualified reflection and dialogue on the European Union’s security, migration, and the corresponding impact on crime control and criminal law. A distinguished panel of speakers included Didier Bigo (Sciences-Po, Paris / King’s College, London), Elspeth Guild (Queen Mary University of London), Valsamis Mitsilegas (University of Liverpool), Ana Gaudêncio (UCILeR), and Dulce Lopes (UCILeR). The meeting was organized and chaired by Pedro Caeiro (UCILeR).

The presentations were followed by a lively discussion with a pool of selected participants, which focused on the identification of (old and new) actors in EU security and a critical analysis of their roles; the outsourcing of certain security tasks to third countries (e.g., Albania and Egypt) through international agreements; the role of the border in the discourse of criminalization and its legitimacy; the meanings and contents of migration as a human right from a legal-philosophical perspective; and the EU strategies in managing migration within the EU and the co-relative relevance of internal borders for an integrated policy.

We expect to publish an e-book with the outcomes of the workshop in the next few months.
