The UCILeR, as part of the project Artificial Intelligence and the maintenance of Public Order: impact of the proposal for a regulation on artificial intelligence on Portuguese law, is organising a Conference dedicated to research on the Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on Artificial Intelligence, of 21 April 2021, in particular on the use of artificial intelligence for the purpose of maintaining public order, which will be held on 18 January 2024, at the Colégio da Trindade, in Coimbra.

Call for papers
The call for abstracts is open to students, researchers and professionals in the sector to share their knowledge and experience of artificial intelligence in the context of public order.
The aim is to debate Artificial Intelligence in Public Order and the impact of the proposed AI Regulation on Portuguese law. This includes the following topics:
- Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council laying down harmonized rules on Artificial Intelligence (Artificial Intelligence Regulation) and amending certain Union legislative acts of 21 April 2021;
- Systems in Annex III, item 6 of the Proposal for a Regulation;
- Impact on human rights;
- Foreign experience;
- Impact on Portuguese law.
Abstracts must comply with the following rules:
- The abstract should be presented in Portuguese, Spanish or English containing up to 300 words, and should also include up to 6 keywords.
- Follow the template here.
- Submissions must follow the formatting instructions and be sent to: projeto-inteligenciartificial@ij.uc.pt by December 22, 2023.
- Each participant can submit up to two abstracts.
- A maximum of 2 co-authors will be allowed. Only one of the authors of co-authored papers may present their work at the Congress, although only that author is guaranteed a certificate of presentation.
- Each abstract submitted will be evaluated by members of the Scientific Committee.
- The result of the analysis of the abstracts will be published by January 12, 2024.
Paper submission
Authors are invited to submit the final version of their work by 10 February 2024.
- Papers should be no longer than 15 pages, including references, tables and annexes.
- Papers must be the final version of the abstract submitted.
- Papers that have been submitted or accepted for publication in a journal or that have already been published will not be accepted.
- Papers must be formatted according to APA style (7th ed.).
- Follow the template here.
- The articles selected by the Scientific Committee will be published in the project e-book.

This conference is organized by the project Artificial Intelligence and the Maintenance of Public Order: Impact of the Proposed Regulation on Artificial Intelligence in Portuguese Law, an exploratory project financed by the University of Coimbra Institute for Legal Research, through its own funds, under the Researchers' Camp 2023 call for projects.
