Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre (MARE)

This group focus on sciences of rivers and river basins including, hydrology, hydraulics, sedimentology, landscape-based analysis of biodiversity and ecological processes, biomonitoring, ecological assessment, assessment of stressors, community ecology, ecosystem functioning, fisheries management and conservation.
The research addresses fundamental and applied issues such as water, sediment and pollutants dynamics in freshwaters, e o development of approaches to assess environmental quality to support industry and governmental agencies and assure wildlife conservation and management.

This group has a strong interdisciplinary expertise at different levels of biological organization, fundamental and applied research questions related to estuarine, coastal areas, and open ocean ecosystems, including oceanography, chemistry, biology, biogeography, environmental quality, ecotoxicology, environmental policies and modelling. Main research objectives address the spatial ecology of marine organisms, with special relevance for monitoring and conservation, identification of ecosystem services and sustainable aquaculture practices to support the governance, conservation and management of marine ecosystems.
