Center for Geosciences of the University of Coimbra (CGeo)

This nucleus has specific objectives:

• Integrate expertise resulting from basic research on initiatives and processes that lead to adding value to natural resources, such as water, conventional and unconventional hydrocarbons and raw materials;
• Participate in global, regional and local initiatives to qualify and value geological objects with heritage value;
• Collaborate on international projects related to global changes, namely sea level and climate, with a focus on geological carbon storage;
• Train graduate students and industry staff through specialized courses and seminars;
• Perform technical consultancy as a complementary tool in financial support for the development of fundamental research.

The members of this nucleus focus their activity on the knowledge inherent to Engineering Geology that they apply to the study and use of engineering geological resources, to environmental management and to the assessment of multiple risks. Its activity is divided into the following fields:

• Geological materials (weathering and alteration of raw materials, preservation of built heritage, quarry extraction, processing, use);
• Engineering Geology (engineering geology in construction activities, heritage preservation, slope stability and its consequences for engineering structures and societies).

This nucleus has as specific objectives to study the adaptations of low complexity societies in the past, namely analyzing adaptation and innovation processes that relate resources and technological knowledge with their availability.
