Celeste dos Santos R. Gomes

My Story as an Earth Science Educator - Celeste Romualdo Gomes What I did, why I did it and what happened.

My first steps as a Geology teacher I graduated in Geology in 1986. In 1990, I took evidence of pedagogical aptitude and scientific capacity, within the scope of Paleomagnetism, an area of research that would take me to the other side of the world, to Brazil, where I made good friends. In 1997, I took my PhD in Geology, also in this area. In the following year, I started to supervise pedagogical internships, within the scope of the initial training of Biology and Geology teachers and I gave the course Didactics of Geology. I was far from imagining where my steps would take me. Education as a passion As an internship supervisor, I came in contact with different educational realities and with countless teachers. Naturally, I was interested in topics in the field of Education. The topics that were most dear to me were environmental education and Science Teaching, in particular Geology. At the same time, I was a professor of the Master's Degree in Geosciences, in the area of specialization in Teaching Natural Sciences and, therefore, I began to guide Master's theses in this area.

At the same time that I am a professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Coimbra, I am a student of the Master in Educational Sciences, specializing in Educational Psychology, at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, at the same institution. In 2008, I acquired a Master's degree in Educational Sciences. Although I have never dissociated myself from scientific research, mainly in the field of paleomagnetism and environmental magnetism, the teaching and dissemination of Geology, as well as the training of teachers, are an integral part of me. Sample preparation for magnetic susceptibility determination, Coimbra, Portugal, 2011 (Ana Rola). Education in Geosciences I supervised 42 master's dissertations and 3 doctoral theses on topics related to teaching and learning in Science, mainly Geology. I organized several colloquiums and meetings for teachers and was responsible for several training courses for Biology and Geology teachers. I also collaborated with schools, through lectures. I was invited to write the preface to two popular books, one of which was written by elementary school students.

Despite the decrease in the number of teachers in initial training, I consider that the teaching and dissemination of Geology, as well as Science education, are central points in my activity. I venture to say, that they are part of who I am! The future of Geology depends on us continuing to do what we love most, teaching! Aknowlegment: To Armando Ferreira and Ana Rola. Celeste Romualdo Gomes, 8th November 2015, 53 years old.

Later, and given his natural aptitude for field geology, he joined the Geological Services of Portugal where he carried out geological cartography work in different regions of the country. Later, he assumed responsibilities in the area of prospecting at the former Sociedade Mineira de Santiago (Aljustrel) and, after a brief experience in supporting road tunnel construction work on the island of Madeira, he returned to the University of Coimbra where, for a few years, was responsible for several disciplines, with emphasis on Remote Sensing, Mineral Deposits and Geological Cartography. During this period he also provided relevant services, particularly in the energy sector.
