Master in Geological and Mining Engineering

Presentation

Geological and Mining Engineering combines the principles of geology with engineering practices to characterize construction sites and exploit geological resources. The areas of activity related to the Master's in Geological and Mining Engineering are fundamental to guaranteeing safety, environmental protection and economy feasibility in engineering works. Detailed knowledge of the composition, structure, and geotechnical behavior of soils and rocks is critical for constructing and predicting the behavior of roads, underground works, foundations, and the stability of excavations and engineering structures. The integration of geological knowledge with engineering principles is essential for the success of more complex projects.

The Master's Degree in Geological and Mining Engineering also enables the acquisition of knowledge and skills for the exploitation and use of geological resources (minerals, water and energy), including aspects related to their exploration, characterization, modelling, evaluation, extraction and recovery. Considering the fundamental aspects of management, safety, environmental protection and recycling. It also enables the development of useful knowledge for the protection of communities against natural hazards, promoting the safety and resilience of infrastructure and populations.

Informações Gerais

  • Course name: Master’s in Geological and Mining Engineering
  • Type: 2nd Cycle course
  • Qualification awarded: Mestre
  • Course coordination: Pedro Andrade (pandrade@dct.uc.pt)
  • Mobility coordination: Joana Ribeiro (joana.ribeiro@uc.pt)
  • Objectives: The master's degree in Geological and Mining Engineering has a markedly applied nature and is of great interest to construction, georesource exploration and environmental consultancy companies, with an ethical stance and respect for the environment and hygiene principles and safety at work. The skills acquired must allow trained professionals to carry out prospecting, location, evaluation, exploration and improvement of geological resources, fundamental in the development of activities in the extractive industry. The multidisciplinary study plan allows collaboration in civil engineering work, namely tunnels, dams, bridges, canals, coastal works, roads, airports and large buildings. As well as collaboration in geoenvironmental projects related to land and subsoil use. At the same time, the study plan contains a strong presence of legislation and standards, allowing students to adopt an ethical stance and respect for the environment and the principles of hygiene and safety at work.
  • Study Plan: Master's Degree in Geological and Mining Engineering
  • Duration: 4 semesters
  • ECTS: 120
  • Numerus clausus: 15
  • Professional Opportunities: The holder of the degree of Master in Geological and Mining Engineering from the University of Coimbra” will be able to begin professional activity in the following companies and organizations: Public works companies (construction of communication routes, airports, tunnels, hydraulic works , underground crossings, water intakes; landfills, etc.); Civil construction companies in general; Companies in the extractive industry (quarrying, mining, mineral treatment workshops, processing of ornamental rocks, environmental recovery, planning and management); Companies specialized in geotechnical projects; Environmental requalification study and project companies (engineering projects, environmental impact studies, quality control, inspection and control of works); Prospecting and survey companies; Regional coordination commissions; Local authorities and intermunicipal associations; Other public administration bodies (geological and mining institute, regional directorates of the ministry of economy, national civil engineering laboratory, institutes under the supervision of the ministry of public works); research bodies.
