Graduation in Geology

Presentation

Geology is the science that studies and interprets the Earth to manage geological resources, to know and minimize natural hazards, to understand geological processes and their repercussions on societies and to assess the impact of the humanity as far as the availability of resources and the changes in the environment are concerned. Regarding these contexts, it can be said that the study of the Planet Earth is more relevant today than ever before.

The mission of the course in Geology at the University of Coimbra is the teaching and interpretation of the physical and chemical processes of the Planet Earth and the Universe, through the study of geological materials, such as minerals, rocks, fossils, water, etc., and geological structures.

The course includes three alternative branches: Technical/Scientific, Geology Education and Technical/Scientific with Minor, which includes the possibility of choosing five curricular units from other scientific areas at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra.

Teaching comprises classroom, laboratory and field activities. “The field” is the largest natural laboratory in learning methodologies for studying geological materials.

The course in Geology trains professionals capable of knowing and interpreting geological settings, searching for and managing the Earth's resources and recognizing and evaluating natural hazards. One is also capable of understanding how the geological processes that shape the planet has an effect on life and assessing the impact of humanity on the Earth.
